Juric hails Aribo for Southampton’s 2-1 victory over Ipswich
Southampton manager Ivan Juric has lauded Joe Aribo’s versatility and commitment after the Nigerian midfielder’s important role in the team’s 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Aribo, who has primarily played in midfield this season, was asked to play in an unfamiliar left centre-back position due to a string of injuries to Southampton’s defenders.
His easy transition into the defensive role proved instrumental as Southampton secured just their second win of the season under Juric.
The match saw Southampton’s defensive woes deepen when both Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jack Stephens were forced off with injuries, leaving Juric with no choice but to reshuffle his defensive line.
Aribo stepped up, playing a key role in stifling Ipswich’s second-half pressure while also scoring the opening goal for Southampton in the first half.

Speaking after the match, Juric expressed his admiration for Aribo’s selflessness and adaptability. “Joe [Aribo], for me, is a great guy; everything for the team. He doesn’t care if he is a forward, at the back, or in the middle. Today, he played left centre-back, and I think he did a great second half,” Juric said. “We worked hard, really well, and Joe today was great.”
Aribo has been a mainstay in the Southampton lineup this season, starting 18 of his 26 appearances. His goal in the Ipswich win is the Nigerian third of the season.
