Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim

Manchester United has sacked Ruben Amorim.  The Portuguese international’s final game in charge was Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds, which leaves them sixth in the Premier League this season.

The 40-year-old oversaw the lowest win percentage of United managers in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, winning just 24 of his 63 matches in charge.

Darren Fletcher, United’s Under-18s coach, is expected to take charge on an interim basis until the end of the season. Their next match is against Burnley on Wednesday night in the Premier League.  Amorim hinted at discord between himself and the Manchester United hierarchy following Sunday’s game.

He emphasised that he had been brought in as ‘manager’ of United, not as ‘head coach’.  ‘It’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decide to change,’ Amorim added. ‘That was my point, I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy comes here to replace me.’

Manchester United wrote in a statement: ‘Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.  ‘Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
