Super Falcons forward Chinaza Uchendu has completed a transfer to Melbourne City FC, leaving French side FC Nantes Féminine to join the reigning champions of the A-League Women’s competition in Australia.
The 27-year-old attacker, who has represented Nigeria at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, brings experience from a career spanning five countries. She previously played for Rivers Angels in Nigeria, SC Braga in Portugal, Linköping in Sweden, Gyeongju KHNP in South Korea, and Galatasaray in Turkey, where she won a league title.
City’s Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, said Uchendu’s arrival will give the squad greater attacking flexibility.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Chinaza to Melbourne City,” Petrillo stated. “She has a great attacking skill set, which aligns perfectly with our tactical philosophy. She also has a great deal of experience across multiple environments – including her international pedigree – which will be a big boost to our squad. Her ability to impact matches in various roles up front will add to the flexibility and options in our front third, which is crucial playing in two competitions again this season.”
Uchendu, who has 10 caps for Nigeria and was part of the squad that won the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, described the move as a chance to contribute to Melbourne City’s pursuit of more trophies.
“It’s an honour to join a club with such a strong reputation and commitment to excellence,” she said. “I’m excited to embrace this new challenge and help bring more silverware to Melbourne City. I’ve heard wonderful things about the club’s culture and professionalism, and everyone has been incredibly welcoming so far. I can’t wait to wear the City jersey and start contributing on the pitch.”
Since entering the A-League Women’s competition in 2015, Melbourne City have established themselves as one of the most successful clubs in Australia, winning four championships and four premierships. They were runners-up in the 2024 Grand Final and reached the final of the AFC Women’s Champions League last season.
