The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a ₦3.5 million fine on El-Kanemi Warriors and barred fans from their stadium for the remainder of the season due to crowd disturbances during their Matchday 34 game against Ikorodu City in Maiduguri.
The NPFL announced the sanctions on its website on Wednesday.
“El-Kanemi Warriors have been sanctioned by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for security breaches, including failure to ensure the sporting conduct of their supporters during the Matchday 34 fixture against Ikorodu City. The sanctions range from monetary fines to an order of the stadium to fans for the rest of the season,” the statement read.
The decision follows incidents where El-Kanemi Warriors’ supporters vandalised the visiting team’s vehicle and threw objects onto the pitch, actions deemed violations of NPFL rules.
The NPFL issued a Summary Jurisdiction notice to the club, citing breaches of Rules B13.52, C9, and B13:18. The club was fined ₦1 million for failing to provide adequate security, which allowed unauthorised individuals to access restricted areas and harass match officials.
An additional ₦1 million fine was imposed for supporters throwing objects onto the field, and another ₦1 million for the club’s failure to control their fans, resulting in damage to Ikorodu City’s vehicle.
El-Kanemi Warriors must also pay ₦500,000 in compensation to Ikorodu City for the vehicle damage.
The NPFL further mandated the club to submit a detailed plan for improved match-day security and crowd control within seven working days. Per Rule C26, the club must respond in writing to accept the ruling or request a hearing before a disciplinary panel.
