Golfers and other lovers of the sport have been promised a conducive atmosphere at the 2022 edition of the Nigeria Cup, which begins this weekend at the Ikoyi Club 1938.

It is the 25th edition of the yearly weeklong competition put in place to celebrate the nation’s Independence anniversary.

This year’s competition will begin with the children’s competition, the chairman of Ikoyi Golf Community Nigeria Association (IGCNA), Felix Majekodunmi, revealed on Monday.

Unveiling the tournament at the Golf Section of the club, Majekodunmi said the silver jubilee edition of the Nigeria Cup would be one to remember in terms of fun, fanfare and quality competition for all participants.

He said sponsors, individual donors and the organising committee have put in place an exciting line of activities to ensure every participant has something to savour throughout the competition.

Explaining the order of events, the chairman, the 2022 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, Peter Eben-Spiff, said the kiddies competition will be followed by caddies on Monday, ladies, veterans, invited guests, and professional golfers before the grand finale on Independence Day, October 1.

Justifying the need to celebrate in spite of the challenges the nation is facing at the moment, Eben-Spiff said there are always challenges in the life of a nation, saying Nigeria is not different.

According to him, the oneness that Nigeria needs to progress is what the Nigeria Cup is all about.

Club Chairman, Demola Mumuney, in his speech, congratulated IGCNA for being able to sustain the spirit of the Nigeria Cup since its debut.

Host Captain, Tony Oboh, while thanking the organising committee for a job well done, urged the would-be winners and participants to always imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship in what they do.

Present at the pre-tournament briefing were the section’s Lady Vice Captain and member of the events organising committee, Deola Banjoko; a committee member, Seline Hemsworth; representative of Nova Bank, Kelvin Anyaegbunam; Grand Oaks representative, Amar Agada; Birdview’s representative and Bekesuoyeibo Stephen, among others.
