J. Atete Football Club of Warri at the weekend beat Zenith of Sapele 1-0 to win the third edition of the Felix Anirah Football Tournament. The Utu Jeremi-based side scored a minute into the second half to take the title.

Future Stars, the Junior team to J. Atete, also defeated Pemu FC of Sapele 1-0 to claim the third place.

For their efforts, J.Atete took the N2 million top prize; second placed Zenith FC got N1.5 million, while third place winner Future Stars received N1 million.

Tournament sponsor, Felix Anirah of the Delta State House of Assembly, said the next edition would be bigger with an increase in the prize money from N2 million to N5 million.

“The fourth edition will capture the entire South South region with limited participants.

“The FAFT tournament, as you can see, is already a brand and any investor can take advantage of it and join the effort to take it to the next level,” he added.

Earlier, former Super Eagles Captain, Austin Eguaveon, led a team of ex internationals in a novelty match against retired professional players. It ended goalless.

Eguaveon commended Chief Felix Anirah and the organising committee for putting together the competition, saying, “this should be encouraged because tournaments like this is where players like us, who represented the country and played to the highest level, were discovered.”
