Mensah wins Chizea @70 birthday kitty
Jolomi Mensah from UBTH Golf Club, Benin at the weekend emerged the overall best player at the Chief Nicholas Onyeogali Chizea @ 70 Birthday Golf Tournament held at Ibori Golf and Country Club (IGCC), Asaba.
The golf course hall was filled with celebration on Friday night following Jolomi’s net score of 73 at the one-day birthday tournament that featured close to eighty golfers from various golf clubs across Delta, Edo, Imo, Lagos and Abuja, among others.
Chief Chizea, Oshimili Ahaba, who also is the captain of the club, in his speech thanked God for allowing him to join the group of septuagenarians in good health. He also expressed gratitude to golfers, friends, associates and members of the Olinzelle, Asaba Traditional Council for gracing the event.
He said: “I feel delighted to join this exclusive club of 70 and above. It is indeed a rare achievement and to hold be the glory. We say life begins at 70, most people have asked me that I don’t look 70, and I told them its because I don’t over indulge that could make me old fast. I do everything in moderation.”
Similarly, members of the Asaba Traditional Council, friends and golfers used the occasion to appreciate God for keeping him hale and healthy to attain that age. They also showered encomiums on the celebrant for living an exemplary life.
However, in the ladies category, UBTH Club Lady Captain, Sandra Emina won the category with 78 net, while A. Uwabor, and J. Graceili played 81 and 82 net respectively to place first and second runner up.
Similarly, men’s handicap 1-13 trophy went to IGCC handicap secretary, Sofi Oniti; Jimmy Odogwu won handicap 14-28 with 84 net ahead of Joe Alex with 88 net, just as Samuel Umole won the guests men event with 75 net. Eddy Osunbor (78 net), and Chief Meg Attoh (82 net) won the veteran men and ladies respectively.
Gabriel Okpunor won the men’s longest drive award, while J. Graceili won the ladies’ category. The climax of the birthday tournament was the thanksgiving service at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the reception held at Grand Hotel, Asaba on Saturday.
