NRFF releases 2016 calendar, regional leagues begin March

The Regional Rugby competitions, comprising the North Central, North West, South-South/East and the South West leagues, will kick off in March and April respectively, the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has revealed.

According to the federation, the Super Cup, which determines the national champions, will hold in November.

The federation stated that the African Cup 1C, the pre-qualifier for 2019 Rugby World Cup tournament, will be staged in Casablanca, Morocco with Mauritius, Morocco, Cameroun and Nigeria among the contestants.

Other championships lined up for the national rugby team this year include the African Cup 7s, which will feature 12 countries, including Kenya, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mauritius, Uganda, Zambia, Botswana, Madagascar, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal and Nigeria. The tournament will be held in September in Nairobi, Kenya.

In the local scene, the NRFF disclosed that Nigeria’s Sevens season will hold from July till November across the country, adding that also in the calendar are coaching and refereeing courses scheduled for the second quarter of the year, rugby developmental programme, as well as the schools and female rugby festivals.

NRFF Technical Director, Fasimoye Olatunji, said, “as you can see from the list of programmes, it is going to be our busiest year and it will also impact greatly on the development of rugby in Nigeria.
