Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Zenith Bank Plc. to establish a football academy in Nigeria as part of its contribution to grassroots sports development.
The governor made the appeal in Asaba during the official kick-off of the 8th edition of the Zenith Bank Delta Principals’ Cup Football Competition.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Kingsley Emu, Oborevwori commended the bank for its consistent sponsorship of the annual tournament, describing it as a model of corporate social responsibility.
“The Principals’ Cup has yielded the desired results as many youths have benefited from the tournament,” he said, urging the bank to expand its commitment by investing in a football academy that would further nurture budding talents.
Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, lauded the tournament as a milestone in the state’s efforts toward youth development, talent discovery, and the promotion of healthy competition among secondary school students.
She praised Zenith Bank for its consistency and dedication since the competition’s inception, describing it as “a model grassroots football programme in Nigeria.”
“You have not only invested in sports but in the future of our children, many of whom have gone on to pursue professional football careers within and outside our country,” Ezewu said.
On his part, the Zonal Head of Zenith Bank, Dr. Ifeanyi Attama, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting youth development through sports and education. He noted that the partnership with the Delta State government aimed at unlocking the potential of young people, whom he described as vital to national growth.
“Education and sports are Siamese twins,” Attama said. “Together, they shape individuals who will contribute to a prosperous future.”
