Former national and Commonwealth sprint champion Endurance Ojokolo says Nigerian athletes have the potential to excel at the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil in August.

Ojokolo, now a coach, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Port Harcourt that the athletes have also be working hard towards the Games.

NAN reports that Ojokolo spoke on the sidelines of the Go Round/SWAN athletics championship for secondary schools in Rivers.

“We have prospects for the Rio Games. We are in camp right now and we are working hard.

“The athletes want to go to Rio and win medals and do the nation proud,’’ Ojokolo said.

Ojokolo said the team’s coaches were doing their best to put the athletes in good shape and sound mind to be in winning mood.

“We are all working together to ensure that we go to Rio to win medals and do the nation proud.’’

She also said the athletes were aware of the challenges ahead and would not want to go to Rio to participate.

“The athletes want to win because they know that there is something good awaiting them and they stand the chance of making good contacts thereafter,’’ the coach said.

Ojokolo commended the sponsor of the athletics championship for secondary schools in Rivers.

“These are the future stars of Nigeria. This kind championship was used to discover the likes of Endurance Ojokolo, Blessing Okagbare, Obinna Metuh and many other stars.

“It is a step in the right direction and should be sustained,’’ she said.(
