Emelie Okika and NJ Omeruo have won the third edition of the annual Luik Tennis and Recreational Club Members League, which ended at the weekend at the club premises in Lekki, Lagos.

The week-long tennis tournament featured singles and doubles events in both male and female categories, with Okika defeating Rume Dubre 6-4, 6-0 to win the men’s title, while Omeruo beat Mobalaji Ogundairo 6-2, 6-0 to win the ladies’ cadre.

Speaking after his victory, Okika said it was sweet to avenge the defeat he suffered from the same player in the last edition.

“I won the very first edition and last year I lost to Dubre. It is nice to reclaim the title. I was focused and very determined to win. Dubre is very skillful and talented but I stayed focused to ensure victory,” Okika said.

Also excited by her victory, Omeruo said, “the tournament has been awesome, Luik is doing well with this kind of tournament. We enjoy tennis as a lifestyle just as the footballers do. I am happy I won this tournament and I will work hard to win it again next year.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Luik Tennis Club, Uzonna Izugbokwe, was among the dignitaries that witnessed the final on Saturday.

He thanked sponsors like Nigeria Breweries, Redbull and Afa Sports for supporting the annual tournament, which he promised will get better every year.
