The maiden Nigeria Ludo Championships ended at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, at the weekend, with top players in different categories rewarded with certificates, trophies and cash prizes for their outstanding performance at the event.

The championship featured over 100 participants with the players displaying a high level of competition in their bid to win laurels.

Speaking at the event, Opeoluwa Odunleye, who won the men’s category of the people living with disability, commended the organisers for giving him and his colleagues opportunity to participate in the event. He said the championship has given him opportunity to hone his skills in ludo, the game he loved so much while growing up.

“I am happy to be part of this epoch event. I have had passion for Ludo right from my childhood days.

“More of this type of ludo championships should be put together to make the sport more popular in Nigeria,” he said.  The organiser of the championship, Olaide Graham, said the national grand finale of the event would hold at Redeemers University, Osun State, later this year.

She expressed delight on the success of the tournament and thanked Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the state’s support for the championship.

“I am satisfied by the turnout of participants at this event, but I want more sponsors to partner with us to promote the sport.

“Ludo is widely accepted by all and it is a great thing to have a competition of this kind, which brings people together to compete and win laurels as well as cash rewards.

“We can only grow better as its target is to bring people from all works of life together to relief them of stress and foster proper unity.

“The participants featured in different categories, which reflects all walks of life in the society,” she said.
