Okiwelu picks All Africa Games spot

SwimmingThe organizers of the annual swimming and sailing competition, which took place at Navy Sailing Club, Ojo, Lagos at the weekend, has promised to continue contributing to the growth of the sport in the country.

The water championship, which featured over 60 competitors in various water sports at the occasion, were exposed to international standard sailing exercises, which according to the organizers, were meant to make the tournament more competitive and interesting.

Speaking at the occasion, Captain Femi Daramola (Rtd), said the Commodore Race, which opens the annual activities of the sailors in the Christmas season, achieved its major target, as most of the children and adults, who competed at the event, gave their best to attain victory.

He declared that the club, which is at the forefront of swimming and sailing sports development in Nigeria, has sponsored many sailors to international championships, adding that the military outfit has also produced talents, who are gearing up to represent Nigeria at the next African Games.

“Over the years the club has sponsored sailors to India and other parts of the world to compete in sailing. The sailors came back with the best training and experience. Based on our zeal to improve the standard of the sport in the country, the club has discovered and trained many talents to represent Nigeria in international tournaments,’’ he said.

Also speaking at the tournament, Sub-Lieutenant Ifeyinwa Okiwelu, who recently qualified to represent Nigeria at the next African Games, expressed optimism that she would train hard to win laurels for Nigeria at the championship.

“I qualified to represent Nigeria in the lesser boat sailing category at the Africa Games, a feat I archieved through hard work and the effort of my coach, Emmanuel Owen.

“Out of the large number of people that took part of the AAG qualifiers last week, I eventually came out tops. The Navy Sailing Club gave me the platform to represent the country in sailing at the next AAG,’’ she said.Elvis Omaro, Aliemeke Helm, Aminu Abubakar, Ayomide Bello, Solomon Kehinde and host of others emerge tops at their various water events.
