Super Eagles Striker, Victor Osimhen, yesterday, demonstrated how important qualifying for the 2026 World Cup is to him by being among the first five players to arrive in the national team’s camp, which opened in Kigali, Rwanda on Sunday.
Osimhen led six other players to the team’s camp in the early hours of yesterday to begin preparations for Friday’s make-or-mar encounter against the Amavubi of Rwanda.
At the weekend, Osimhen scored a hat-trick that solidified Galatasaray’s hold at the zenith of the Turkish league, leaving them 10 points clear with 71 points accumulated from 22 league matches, consisting of 22 wins and five draws.
Before departing Istanbul for Kigali, Osimhen had declared that the Super Eagles would go for an outright victory against Rwanda on Friday so as to bring Nigeria’s World Cup dream back on track.
An update from the Super Eagles camp, yesterday indicated that Osimhen was been joined in the camp by Bruno Onyemaechi, Papa Daniel Mustapha, Kayode Bankole, Amas Obasogie, and Tolu Arokodare.
According to Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, all team officials, including Coach Eric Chelle have settled down in Kigali. Other players were expected to arrive at the team’s camp yesterday evening.
The Super Eagles must secure victory against Rwanda while hoping that South Africa and Benin Republic drop points in this round of qualification for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Nigeria has just three points from four matches played so far against the seven points by Rwanda, South Africa, and the Benin Republic.
Meanwhile, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has donated a bus for members of the Unified Supporters Club in his state to transport them to Uyo to support the Super Eagles against Zimbabwe later this week.
The Chairman of the Supporters Club, Vincent Okumagba told The Guardian in a telephone chat, yesterday, that he had been instructed to organise three Marcopolo luxury buses (two in Lagos and one in Abuja) to convey his members to Uyo for the clash against Zimbabwe.
“I must commend the Bauchi State governor for donating a bus for my members coming from Bauchi to Uyo,” Okumagba said. “Two buses will be leaving Warri, Delta State for Uyo on March 23. All other states in the South-South region are also preparing to storm Uyo in large numbers. I had an online meeting with supporters in Bayelsa and Rivers State on Sunday and they are coming too. We are requesting 1,000 jerseys for the supporters alone.”
