Organisers reveal prizes as 35 teams meet at Lagos polo tourney
Organisers of the 2025 NPA/GTCO Lagos International Polo Tournament, yesterday, revealed that 33 teams will vie for four top prizes and six subsidiary laurels at the event, which gallops off on February 4.
According to the organisers, the teams, which are fortified with foreign professionals and thoroughbred Argentine horses, will compete for the Silver Cup, Lagos Low Cup, Open Cup and the event’s biggest prize, the Majekodunmi Cup.
The subsidiary prizes are the Oba of Lagos Cup, Governor’s Cup, Adedapo Ojora Memorial Cup, Sani Dangote Cup, the Italian Ambassador’s Cup, the Independence Cup, Lagos Heritage Cup, Chief of Naval Staff Cup, and the Owen Bowl.
Unveiling the programme for the tournament at the Lagos Polo Club, Tournament Manager, Olumayowa Ogunnisi, said that the glamorous event would be decided over three weeks with six equally matched teams jostling for the Open Cup and the Silver Cup in the opening week.
The highly revered Majekodunmi Cup, he said, will hold from February 11 to 16 with four teams, including the Lagos Art Hotel, Lagos Shoreline, Lagos STL and visiting Abuja Rubicon, battling for the top prize.
He said that the last week of festival will feature teams drawn from major polo centres across the country battling for the Low Cup.
“It’s going to be three weeks of thrilling polo experience for our esteemed sponsors, partners and lovers of the noble game,”Ogunnisi said, while commending the main sponsor GTCO and other supporters for keying into the event that has the reputation as one of the biggest polo tournaments in Africa.
Lagos Polo Captain, Mohammed Sani Dangote, who gave a breakdown of the competing teams, disclosed that professional players from Argentina, United Kingdom and South Africa, as well as professional umpires will also feature in the tournament.
