Police College Summer Badminton Clinic unearths 20 stars, organisers reveal
Over 20 talents were discovered at the just-concluded Police College Badminton Club’s Summer Holiday Clinic, the organisers have revealed. The clinic ended at the Mutual Benefit/Police Badminton Complex inside the college in Ikeja, Lagos at the weekend.
According to the organisers, over 500 children featured in the clinic organised to discover talents in the sport at their formative stage.
Speaking at the end of the clinic, Vice President of Lagos State Badminton Association, Retired Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Macaulay said the association’s vision, which is to go round the state to source for more talents in badminton, manifested in the summer clinic.
She stated that the body would keep collaborating with corporate organisations to organise more grassroots championships, adding, “the Police College Badminton Clinic is a fall-out of the Lagos State Badminton Association’s desire to go to the grassroots and discover talents.
“Nigeria has a lot of children with abundant talents in different sports. Competitions like this allow children with special abilities in racket sports like badminton to be discovered. I thank God that the clinic turned out successful as many skillful children in badminton were discovered. The Lagos Badminton Association will keep working hard to lift the game of badminton in the state,” she said.
Also speaking at the event, Police College Badminton Club’s captain, Macaulay Igwe said the talents discovered in the clinic would be monitored and exposed to more competitions, noting that grassroots development remained the key to Nigeria’s growth in sports.
“I am happy that with just two weeks we were able to discover 20 talents out of the large number of children that attended the clinic. With the success of the event, the organisers will not relent to put together more tournaments like this to expose more kids to the game of badminton.
“So many stars have emerged at this clinic in the past and the club will continue to do its best to develop badminton.”
At the end of the clinic, prizes and medals were awarded to the participants.
