Policeman, Ubah, wins Rafiu Ladipo Armwrestling Championship
Raphael Ubah, a policeman based in Imo State, has emerged the best athlete in the male category at the first edition of the Dr. Rafiu Ladipo National ArmWrestling Open Championship held at the National Stadium, Lagos.
Ubah, who competed as a member of the Energy ArmWrestling Club of Owerri, defeated all opponents that came his way in quick dispatch in the 100+kg class in the competition that featured 36 male athletes.
He won a giant trophy and a gold medal in the competition that also featured 10 athletes registered for the female class and eight students’ entries.
Chisom Ugwuani, also of the Energy Club of Owerri, won the silver medal while Ogunbanwo Sunday from Ogun State finished third in the 100+kg class male.
National women’s champion, Ijeoma Soribe, in the women’s 80kg class, retained her title when she defeated Ibiyeye Shukurat and Bukola Adeyeye, who placed second and third respectively. Her brilliance earned her the award for the best female athlete, including a giant trophy and a gold medal.
In the men’s 65/70kg class, Amidu Usman of Kaduna State won the gold when he outclassed Michael Ajitena and Mukaram Adetoro both of Lagos State, while in the Student’s category, Ijadiminiyi Olaitan of Eletu Odibo Secondary School, Lagos, won the gold medal, with Adeboye Sulaiman, also of Eletu Odibo School, taking the silver medal.
Medals were presented to the winners by the Head of Department, Coaching, of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Waheed Wale Adenekan, who was supported by the president of the Nigeria ArmWrestling Federation, Engineer Samuel Jackson.
The Vice President of the ArmWrestling Federation, Mrs. Lade Aloba, said during the closing ceremony of the one-day event that the winners would be selected to represent Nigeria at the Africa ArmWrestling Championship, which has been slated for Cairo, Egypt in May 2016.
She noted that all the top athletes, who won medals in their various categories, would be invited to camp ahead of the African Championship to ensure adequate preparations under the watch of the federation’s Technical Director, Femi Akinsanya.
