Pummeling Nigeria’s Usman will be my Xmas gift to my fans, Uganda’s Kakembo boasts
• Fans to get 50 GOtv decoders
A Ugandan boxer, Edward Kakembo, has vowed to ‘destroy’ his Nigerian opponent, Waidi Usman, when they meet on December 26 in an African Boxing Union featherweight title fight at the GOtv Boxing Night in Lagos.
Kakembo, who is expected to arrive in Lagos today for the event slated for Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Lagos, said the fact that the fight is taking place in Nigeria would not give his opponent an advantage.
“I will win the African title and the cash prize for the best boxer of the tournament to make my fans back home very happy at this period. It is going to be my Christmas gift to my fans,” he said.
Kakembo, a Ugandan professional boxing commission champion, is regarded as a knockout specialist in his country.
GOtv Boxing V, as the edition is tagged, will make the biggest payout in Nigerian boxing history when a cheque of N1.5 million is handed to the best boxer of the night on Boxing Day.
The event will feature two other title fights and a national challenge duel.
One of the national title fights is in the light welterweight division, which will see rising star, Olaide Fijabi, attempting to dethrone the incumbent, Sadiq “Police” Machine.
The other fight will feature Stanley Eribo against Sunday Olalekan for the national welterweight title, while a challenge bout in the super middleweight division will see Sunday Ajuwa taking on Rasheed Abolaji.
The event, which kicks of at 5.00 p.m., is sponsored by GOtv and supported by MultiChoice, SuperSport, Newsbreak.ng, KSquare Security, Paragonis Multimedia Limited, Brilla FM, Bond FM and Complete Sports. The fights will be broadcast live on SuperSport in 47 African countries.
Meanwhile, fans at the coming event will have opportunities to win GOtv decoders. A total of 50 decoders will be given out by the sponsors. The decoders will be won through lucky dips.
