Residents task Ikorodu City FC to win 2025/26 NPFL title

As Nigerians look forward to the commencement of the 2025/26 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, some football-lovers in Ikorodu have tasked Lagos State flag bearers, Ikorodu City FC, to go all out for the title.

Ikorodu City FC finished fourth at the end of the last season, scoring 60 goals. They were promoted to the elite division in 2024 after spending three years in the lower cadre.

Speaking with The Guardian, during the week, one of the club’s supporters, Adetunji Kehinde, said: “I’m a big fan of Ikorodu City FC. They started catching my attention two years ago before they got promoted to the NPFL from the lower division. They finished fourth last season with 17 wins and three draws. They conceded few goals, and so, I believe they must have recruited some quality players from the transfer market, strengthen their defense line and the goalkeeping area ahead the new season.

“Their frontline is strong, but they should focus on strengthening the backline and the midfield. The defense and the middle need reinforcement,” Kehinde stated.

Also speaking, another fan, who his name as coach Jide urged Ikorodu City FC to focus their mind in securing a continental ticket for Lagos State this season saying: “We are looking forward to see a continental ticket this year. Ikorodu City FC should aim to qualify for African competitions.

“I know that it requires not just on-pitch quality but robust off-field support, better facilities, smart training plans, and meticulous preparation. It is about building a sustainable structure,” Coach Jide stated.

Another fan, Whesu Ayotunde, said: “Honestly, I am very optimistic about Ikorodu City FC making Lagosians proud this season because after a strong debut in the NPFL, where they surprised everyone with a top-four finish, I think they have earned more respect. The team has youthful energy, and they play attacking football with organised midfield.

“I am expecting good results this season. They are going to do better and put smile on our faces,” Ayotunde stated.
