The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has launched a seven-day football tournament initiative aimed at reducing crime among youths in society by harnessing the potential of grassroots sports, with a focus on street soccer programmes.
Assistant to the Governor on Grassroot Sports, Mr Atewogboye Adebanji Adeoye, said this innovative approach would underscore the administration’s commitment to inclusive development, responsive governance, and youth empowerment.
Adeoye stated this at the kick-off of the tournament in Lagos, adding that the sports programme focused on young people, providing a positive outlet to reduce involvement in crime and social vices, and fostering community engagement.
He explained that thousands of youths have participated, as they have been equipped with essential life skills, including teamwork and discipline. Problem-solving enhances their confidence and self-esteem among participants and instils a sense of purpose and direction among young people.
Adeoye noted that this event aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision to promote grassroots sports development, provide a platform for young talents to shine, reduce youth involvement in criminal activities, and empower them to make positive contributions to society. It also aligns with the agenda to promote a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and social responsibility, and to enhance the overall well-being and quality of life for Lagosians, especially young people.
He stated the sports programme would revive the glory days of MTN Nigeria Street Soccer in Lagos.
Adeoye noted that N500,000 has been estimated for the tournament, with N250,000 allocated to the 1st runner-up and N100,000 to the 2nd runner-up.
He explained the governor has plans to invest additional resources to capture the interest of youth across all 57 local governments in the state, anticipating a positive reduction in crime rates and increased economic opportunities.
Adeoye stated that by leveraging the transformative power of sports, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration is poised to create a more prosperous and secure future for the people of Lagos.
He noted the Lagos Street Soccer Stars Initiative has already shown promising results, with thousands of spectators witnessing the electrifying kickoff in Oshodi-Isolo Axis.
He said, “The programme aimed at driving sports development, youth engagement, and community outreach, with plans to expand to other local governments in Lagos.
“To engage Lagos youths in grassroots sports activities, cash rewards have been put in place for participating teams.”
