Southgate is England’s new manager

Gareth Southgate has been chosen by the English FA as the man to lead the Three Lions forward, becoming the new manager of the national team.

According to the English FA, the 46-year-old, who stepped up from his role as the Under-21s manager in September after the departure of Sam Allardyce and, having overseen two wins and two draws as interim boss, has now signed a permanent contract.

Reacting to his confirmation yesterday, Southgate said: “I am extremely proud to be appointed England manager. However, I am also conscious that getting the job is one thing, now I want to do the job successfully.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the players over these past four games and I think there’s huge potential. I’m determined to give everything I have to give the country a team that they’re proud of and one that they’re going to enjoy watching play and develop.

For me, the hard work starts now.”

A defender during his playing days, Southgate notched almost 650 appearances in an 18-year career.
