Top officials of the Federal Ministry of Sports are expected in Asaba, Delta State, on Sunday for a three-day Joint Technical Meeting to prepare for the Eighth National Youth Games, slated for September 10 to 20 in the state.

In 2023, Delta State hosted the seventh edition of the Games and topped the medals table just when Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was settling down in office. Going by the agreement between Delta State and the Federal Government last year, the state will also host the next two editions of the NYG in 2025 and 2026.

The Director General of Delta Sports Commission, Festus Owhojero, told The Guardian, yesterday that Governor Oborevwori, in his effort to host a successful National Youth Games, has secured accommodation for the athletes at the famous Osadebay University, Asaba.

The move, according to Owhojero, is to allow the young athletes to relax and concentrate on their events throughout the competition.

“Students of Dennis Osadebay University are currently on holiday and will resume late in September. It will accommodate about 70 per cent of the athletes for the NYG.”

“The state government has also reached an agreement with some other schools, which we are using for the National Youth Games to shift their resumption date by one week. We are expecting between 5,500 to 6,000 athletes for the eighth National Youth Games,” he stated.

Meanwhile, all directors of sports in the country are gearing up for Delta 2024 National Youth Games holding between September 10 and 20. The Chairman of the Directors of Sports in Nigeria, Utobo Emmanuel, who is also the Director of Sports in Ebonyi State, told The Guardian, yesterday that they are set for the Games.

“I am in touch with my colleagues in different states, and we are set for Delta 2014 National Youth Games. I am sure the attendance this time will be more than what was witnessed last year. This is one avenue to discover young athletes to be in the pool of Team Nigeria’s athletes for selection to major competitions, including the Los Angeles 2028 Games,” Utobo stated.
