The Super Falcons, yesterday, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, moved closer to the 2024 African Women’s Cup of Nations with a 5-0 defeat of final qualifying opponents, Cape Verde.
The Super Falcons showed that the absence of some of their superstars was nothing to worry about, with the way they demolished Cape Verdeans.
Uchenna Kanu and substitute Esther Okoronkwo scored a brace each as the nine-time African champions gave Nigerians reasons to smile yesterday.
A 22-yard freekick in the fourth minute by Gift Monday opened the floodgate of goals, before Kanu made it two off a goalmouth melee that followed a corner kick to slot past goalkeeper Jacinta Rodrigues in the 25th minute.
The left sided attacker made it 3-0 when she picked a pass from Toni Payne on a swift counterattack launched by Ajibade. The introduction of Okoronkwo upped the Falcons’ attacking tempo with the newcomer putting the ball past Rodrigues in the 67th minute, off a cross by Ajibade for 4-0. She completed her brace 13 minutes later when she latched on a Rofiat Imuran cross from the left to set the mountain of qualification for the Women’s Nations Cup too high for Cape Verde to climb. The second leg of the tie will be in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on December 5.
