Excitement filled the air on Wednesday as athletes from Taraba State departed for Asaba, the Delta State capital, to participate in the forthcoming National Youth Games.
The spirited athletes, brimming with enthusiasm, expressed their determination not only to compete but to return home with medals.
Speaking to The Guardian before their departure, several athletes shared their optimism and readiness to make Taraba proud.
“We are not just going to participate. We are going to win and also show the world the positive image of our state,” one of the athletes said.
They also showered praises on the state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, crediting him for prioritising sports development in the state.
The athletes commended his establishment of the Taraba State Sports Commission, which they described as a strategic move that will further drive growth in the sector.
Team leader and Director of Sports in the state, George Shitta, also applauded Governor Kefas for making Taraba’s participation in the games possible.
Echoing the athletes’ sentiments, Shitta said he is confident that the team will return with medals.
He emphasised the importance of discipline among the athletes, urging them to remain ambassadors of the state and uphold its good image throughout the competition.
The National Youth Games serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing young sporting talents from across the country. According to Shitta, Taraba’s contingent is determined to make their mark in this year’s edition.
