Team Nigeria loses to Japan in badminton event

Team Nigeria’s Godwin Olofua and Anuoluwapo Opeyori were yesterday defeated by hosts Japan, in their first game of the men’s doubles badminton event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Playing in Group B, the country’s representative suffered a heavy defeat when they lost 21-2, 21-13 to the firepower of the Japanese twosome of Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe in one of the matches decided in the group stage.
Olofua and Opeyori will have the opportunity to stage a comeback when they meet Denmark in their next match tomorrow.
Denmark won their first game against the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) and will be hoping to continue their winning run against the Nigerian side.
The hosts currently occupy the first position with the Danes in the second position and ROC and Nigeria in the third and fourth positions respectively.
Meanwhile, it is only the first and second-placed teams that will gain qualification into the quarterfinal stage of the badminton event.
