The streets of Lagos came alive yesterday as football lovers lined up to catch a glimpse of the Total Africa Cup of Nations trophy, which began its continent-wide journey from the nation’s commercial capital.
Led by officials of Total Nigeria, the fans were treated to music and dance from Victoria Island through Osbourne Road, Third Mainland Bridge to Ikeja, where football lovers had the opportunity of taking photographs with the crown.
According to the organisers, the tour is aimed at bringing together football fans to see the prestigious trophy, sharing the excitement of Africa’s biggest football event, which will be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026
Thrilled by the turnout of football fans at the event, Total Nigeria’s Managing Director, Dr Samba Seye, said: “We are delighted to host the first stage of the Trophy Tour here in Lagos and kick off the 2025 tournament. Being the partner of African football is a great source of pride. Football is a universal, federating sport that is synonymous with joy, enthusiasm and, of course, energy.”
Also speaking at the event, GM, Retail and Cards, Abdullahi Umar, said: “This is not just the beginning of a tour. It is the ignition of a continent-wide celebration of football, unity, and heart beat pulses with the rhythm of the beautiful game.
“Nigeria holds a special place in African football history. From legendary players to unforgettable moments on the pitch, this country has consistently shaped the narrative of the sport across the continent. That’s why we chose to begin this journey here, where football is not just a sport, but a way of life.”
“This year, the Trophy Tour will travel across five countries, Nigeria, Angola, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, and Morocco, bringing the spirit of the Africa Cup of Nations to millions of fans. We are proud to begin this journey in a country that has shaped the very history of African football.”
