Imo State male football team Coach, Johnny Anyagwa, believes his team has the qualities needed to win the gold medal in the event at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Benin City, Edo State.

Imo State thrashed Delta State 4-2 in their opening match of the event on Wednesday at the University of Benin Sports Complex Mainbowl.
Speaking to The Guardian at the end of the match, an elated Anyagwa said he was certain his boys would cart home the gold medal, adding,

“Judging from what I just saw in the match, I am certain that my boys are ready for this competition. We started grooming these boys even before the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

“The boys have been together all this while and I believe with their form, we will also beat the Lagos State team on Friday at the Methodist Boys Secondary School, Ugbowo.

“We have our own style of play and my boys simply adhered to it. Our pattern is tip-tap that encourages holding onto the ball, making short passes and running into space. This has been our game plan and the boys just exhibited it today,” he said.

The coach, a former Iwuanyanwu Nationale midfielder, added, “There are still some players we have not introduced. In our next game, I plan to introduce them so that the fans will get to see them play.

“I want to let the Lagos State team know that will meet a strong and formidable team. We have proved it today and we will also show it against them. Our target is to go home with the gold medal.”

Earlier, Delta State women team played a 2-2 draw against Lagos State.
