AS politicians go back to the drawing board following the postponement of the general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from February 14 to March 28 for the Presidential and National Assembly, and from February 28, 2015 to April 11, 2015 for governorship and state Assembly respectively, students are looking forward to be actively involved in the campaigns before the new dates of elections.

Speaking during the week in Lagos, on the moves by some political parties to donate buses to institutions of higher learning in the country as part of their electioneering activities, the Public Relations Officer of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Students Union Government (SUG), Comrade Owolabi Oladimeji, stated that it is a welcome move.

According to him: “It is a very good development that political parties could remember us now and even after the elections, we look forward to the buses because we really need them, so long as there are no unfavourable conditions attached to it.”

“We are going to appreciate such gesture by coming out en mass to vote.  When the date for the collection of Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) was extended, we encouraged students to go out and collect. Unlike in 2011, today, we are fully involved in the elections,” he said.

Oladimeji explained that presently most schools across the country do not have students bus, adding that the last one YABATECH had has broken down and has been abandoned because it has remained unserviceable for long.

“The students will vote for any party that has their interest at heart. I don’t belong to any political party, but the question is, why should I vote for you when you do not have my interest at heart?

“We are planning a political programme tagged, ‘Why Should I Vote For You?’ In which we plan to invite political parties to come over and tell us why we should vote for them and how they are going to protect the interest of the students.”

He called on politicians to always protect the interest of Nigerian students, especially in the area of eliminating strikes. For instance, I am supposed to be out of the school by now because my programme is a two-year programme, but I have spent over two years here.

It would be recalled that last year, the Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Aliyu donated a 16-seater bus to the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, EDM, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife.

Also, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Olajumoke Akinjide, had only last year, donated four luxury buses, one to each of the students’ leadership of The Polytechnic, Ibadan (PI); University of Ibadan (UI); Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso and Emmanuel Alayande College of Education (EACOE), Oyo.
