Church of the living God: The approved conduct – Part 2
(B) Approved Conduct in the Church
We have identified the Church from the focal text. The church is the house of God, the pillar of truth and the ground of truth. This section will focus on correct behaviour of God’s children in the church.
First, we noticed that people thought they could just do anything in the church. That’s absolutely wrong. Paul presented guidelines on how to behave in the church in case he was not physically present. We may not be physically involved in your local assembly or denomination; but the scripture is not silent about the behavioural pattern in the church, no matter the identifying nomenclature. Let’s collectively stop these ‘rubbish’ (unapproved conducts) that is hindering the progress of the kingdom project. (Nehemiah 4:10)
The instruction as expressed in first Epistle to Timothy, is to all class in the church; to the bishops, elders, deacons, and all workers. The admonition is to the priests and parishioners; leaders and followers; masters and slaves; the rich and the poor men and women; single, married and widows.
Second, let’s emphasise three approved conducts.
• Speak the Truth: Since the church is the pillar and ground of truth, we must be ready to speak the truth. First, Jesus Himself is the truth (John14:6); the gospel is the word of truth (Ephesians 1:13). Believers are admonished to speak the truth in love, we should not lie to ourselves. (Ephesians 4:15,21,25) Therefore, let us make all efforts to preach the truth, speak the truth to ourselves. Paul became enemy to some people because he told them the truth (Galatians 4:16); what a difficult but rewarding assignment.
• Accept the Truth: Although truth is like a bitter pill, the church should be ready to accept and obey the truth. Many a Christian will not submit to the truth; a lot will revolt at the truth. Parishioners will attack the priest at the presentation of word of truth. It is a lot of challenge in the contemporary church. Don’t let us be like the Church in Galatia (3:1;5:7); let us yield humbly to the truth.
• Live the Truth: Let’s note that knowing the truth without living it is of no value. Let us, therefore, live the truth even outside the four walls of the structure of the church. The whole world is waiting to see believers in Jesus to demonstrate the truth they believe. Paul affirmed we cannot do anything against the truth but for the truth. (2Corinthians 13:8)
Let us, therefore, gird ourselves with the belt of truth. (Ephesians 6:14)
