Traditional Rulers in Delta State have promised to resist any attempt by influential members of the society to dethrone duly recognised traditional rulers of kingdoms in the State.

They have also resolved to protect the sanctity and sacredness of the traditional institution in all ramifications. In a three point communiqué read by the chairman Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor II at the end of a meeting in Asaba, the traditional rulers condemned in very strong terms, what they called “unprovoked attack” on traditional rulers by a section of influential members of their kingdoms, saying that they would not tolerate such acts forthwith.

The monarch frowned at attempts by such influential members of the society to either incite or mobilise the people against their traditional rulers as a result of the refusal of such royal fathers to accede to requests that are detrimental to the interest of the people.

Supported by the 2nd vice chairman and Pere of Akugbene Mien, Pere S. Luke Kalanama VIII, the chairman alluded to the failed attempt to dethrone the Osuvie of Agbarho, insisting that no individual no matter how highly placed, could dethrone any traditional ruler without following due process.

He said instead of resorting to self-help with its attendance consequences, aggrieved persons should seek redress in court. The council called on military authorities and the police to be at alert and check activities of some of its retired members who might want to be used to intimidate, blackmail or harass the people and cause crisis in the society.

Dr. Efeizomor, however, charged royal fathers to conduct themselves with decorum, dignity and respect that is befitting of their status, saying they should always endeavour to leave above board and be transparent in handling their affairs. The council also informed members of the committee set up by government to valuate Delta State assets nationwide and urged the people to respond positively to the committee as they visit various towns and communities.
