Rt. Rev. Peter Imasuen of the Benin Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has lauded the anti-corruption campaign of the Federal Government, saying it was a needed step to check the country’s economic slide. He urged that all involved should be brought to book. He made this known during his presidential address at the 18th Synod of the Diocese held at All Souls’ Anglican Church, Benin City, where he also condemned the resurgence of violence in the Niger Delta region, as well as the menace of herdsmen, who have been attacking communities around the country.

Imasuen also commended the courageous effort of the Nigerian Army in routing Boko Haram terrorists from Sambisa forest.

“It is heart-warming that one of the Chibok girls has been rescued,” he said. “Efforts should, therefore, be intensified to rescue the rest of the girls still in captivity. Boko Haram and the likes have done serious damage to the economy of Nigeria.”

He equally commended the Edo Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike for beefing up security and putting criminals on the run, but appealed to him to caution some of his men, “especially IPOs, who collect money indiscriminately from people without proper investigation”.

The Bishop called for the diversification of the country’s economy, while lamenting that, “agriculture has been abandoned such that Nigeria now imports food and palm oil. The economy should be diversified to accommodate other sectors such as mining and tourism to raise our gross domestic product (GDP).”
