The Department of Adult Education, University of Ibadan (UI), is set to organise a rally as part of activities to mark the 2026 International Literacy Day.

International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8, provides an opportunity to promote literacy and draw attention to its importance in advancing inclusive and sustainable development.

The Head of the Department of Adult Education, Prof. Olumide Olajide, said this year’s celebration would be held under the theme, “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity.”

Olajide said the 2026 celebration was particularly significant as it marks the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day.

According to him, the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on global progress in literacy, address persistent and emerging challenges and shape future literacy agendas.

He said the theme underscores the role of literacy in promoting inclusion, supporting sustainable futures and expanding opportunities for livelihoods and economic development.

As part of activities to create awareness ahead of the celebration, Olajide and the Head of Adult Education and Open Distance Learning Unit, UI, Prof. Kester Ojokheta, are scheduled to appear on a BCOS live current affairs breakfast programme on Monday, September 7, 2026.

The programme, which is expected to run from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., will provide an opportunity to discuss the significance of literacy and the relevance of this year’s theme.

The department’s rally is expected to further sensitise members of the public to the importance of literacy, particularly its role in promoting social inclusion, sustainable development and economic prosperity.

The 2026 International Literacy Day celebration will also provide stakeholders with an opportunity to examine emerging literacy challenges and explore strategies for ensuring that literacy remains central to human and societal development.
