CHRIST is Jesus, the Messiah, the Saviour, the Lamb of God, the Good Shepherd, the Redeemer, the Prince of Peace, the Nazarene, and the Galilean. Christ, the official title given to Jesus in the New Testament, describes Jesus’ job — to be the anointed Saviour. The word comes from the Greek Christos, a translation of the Hebrew Messiah (John 1:41). Both terms come from verbs, which mean, “to anoint with sacred oil”; hence, as titles, they mean “the Anointed One.” These names for Jesus express the idea that God anointed Him to save His people.

God has anointed Christ Jesus with His uncommon anointing. Jesus is the Saviour from all kinds of storm. He carries “Good News for the Oppressed” from God to the doomed world.

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has appointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to announce that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favour has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel, he will give beauty for ashes, joy instead of mourning, and praise instead of despair…”- Isaiah 61:1-3.

The heavy anointing is upon Him to do what nobody can do. “And no doubt you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the Devil, for God was with him”-Acts 10:38. Peter’s succinct and powerful sermon here contains a brief statement of the Good News: Jesus’ perfect life of servanthood; His death on the cross; His resurrection, personally witnessed and experienced by Peter and Jesus’ fulfilment of the Scriptures.

This same unusual anointing has been given to all His children, His chosen ministers and His Church. Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, King of Kings behind His Church.

“Jesus came and told His disciples, “I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth.  Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. God gave Jesus authority over heaven and earth. On the basis of that authority, Jesus told His disciples to make more disciples as they preached, baptised, and taught. With this same authority, Jesus still commands us to tell others the Good News and make them disciples for the Kingdom”-Matt.28: 18-20.

The Church, through generations, has the backing of the Almighty God. Christ Is the Light of the world. He shines His light through us –Church to the entire world. Christ’s light surrounds the Church. “Jesus said to the people, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life”-John 8:12. Christ has given us power over the devil and all his agents. He performs miracles, signs and wonders in the Church through His people.
