Over 5,000 women from all walks of life gathered at The Fountain of Life Church, Ilupeju last Sunday for the annual Discovery for Women conference.

The event which, coincided with Mothers Day, came on the heels of the International Women’s Day. It highlighted not just the potential of women to make a difference but showcased the actual contribution women were making in all spheres of human endeavor.

In attendance were women, ranging from corporate climbers, start-up business owners to political officeholders, united by a common factor. They included Ibukun Awosika, Chairman, First Bank of Nigeria, Omobola Johnson, Former Minister Information and Technology, and other business gurus in the likes of Yewande Zaccheus and Ayo Megbope.

The conference highlighted that humanity has come a long way from the era that barred women from significant civic engagement and confined them to the home front to women as presidents in Africa and the possibility of America’s first female president in history. Experts are reaching a near consensus that the attributes needed to forge ahead in the post-industrial economy are emotional intelligence, open communication and the ability to sit still and focus.

It was discussed that gender equality in public service and the marketplace still has a distance to cover, and that there were more opportunities for business and career success for women than there ever was at any moment in human history.

Some of the speakers were as the Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic IBTC Holdings, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu, the immediate past DG National Center for Women Development Mrs. Olusola David Borha, and the host Pastors Taiwo and Nomthi Odukoya.
Borha urged the women to live their dreams, “never get intimidated by anyone, no one can determine your life. Hold on to your passion and develop it because it is your core,” stressing, “the impact we have on the lives of others is paramount in our lives”.

Onyeka Onwenu advised, “no matter what the devil throws at you, pick up yourself and keep moving.” Odukoya said it was imperative to trust God to bring out the best in us and shun the prevailing anxieties that attend daily living.

Speaking in his typical animated posture and energy, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya charged the women to dare the impossible. “It is amazing that God does much more than we ask for,” he said, assuring the women that regardless of the changing times and seasons, they would not be contained.
