The birth of Jesus was a real event that happened on a day in history, not in a mythological story. The birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ was an announcement of good news to the world because history tells us that the time of our Lord’s birth was indeed a time of weariness and widespread despair among men and nations of the earth. At that time people lived in great fear, not knowing what next will happen. Herod the Great was cruel, and perpetrated all manner of wickedness upon whoever was the object of his disfavour. It was indeed a time of total blackout and the people were in dire need of change, and suddenly, a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel to the shepherds taking care of their flock in a field near Bethlehem at night and said, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people” (Luke 2:10).
The birth of Jesus Christ was an announcement of good news to the people of the world. The “good news” is that Jesus has won the victory for us and therefore, we live from victory to victory. You don’t pray for victory but you pray from a place of victory to victory. The “Goodnews” announces that satan has been defeated and under our feet. Any gospel that keeps you in fear of satan is not the gospel because the gospel is announcement of good news to the world. The birth of Jesus Christ brought hope to mankind who were living in fear, bondage and hopelessness. The birth of Jesus Christ was announcement of God’s love for man (John 3:16). God loves you and wants to save you from your sins. God’s intention is not for you to perish in hell but to come to repentance and spend eternity with Christ in heaven.
Christmas celebration is about celebrating the best gift to the world, which is the gift of a Saviour to the world. How best to respond to Christmas celebration? It is by surrendering your heart to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. When the wise men from the East came to the house where Jesus was born, the Bible said they opened their treasures and presented unto Jesus gifts such as gold, frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:11). Matthew 6:21 states, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” In other words, the wise men from the East surrendered their hearts to Christ in total submission to the Lordship of Christ. Another way to respond to Christmas is to spread the news that a Saviour has been born and that is what the gospel is all about. As a child of God, you must go out to tell people about Christ so that the Saviour will be born into their hearts. The message of the gospel is the gospel of Christ and Jesus Christ Himself preached the gospel (Matthew 4:23) and the apostles of Jesus also preached the gospel (Acts 8:25). The Church has been charged to preach the gospel (Matthew 24:13-14).
Christmas is about celebrating a Saviour who was born with the purpose of saving you from your sins. Saviour is actually an Old Testament word that means, “One who delivers his people.” If you are not yet saved from your sins, you desperately need the Saviour. Jesus came to personally save you from your sins and that is why Luke 2:11 affirms that a Saviour is born unto you. Surrender your life to Jesus Christ so that a Saviour will be born into your heart.
