THE other day on a BBC television programme, an erudite British Professor of Physics stated that he is certain God does not exist. He based his claim on the fact that there is no empirical, physically scientific proof of God’s existence. Such a statement can seem shocking at best and blasphemous at worst to anyone of faith. The Bible states in Psalm 14:1 that the fool says in his heart, there is no God.
Yet, the onus rests on the Christian to prove God exists. After all, James says, ‘show me your faith without your works and I will show you my faith by my works,’ further admonishing that faith without works is dead (James 2:14-18). Christ Jesus’ mission was not only teaching about God’s existence, but also proving it – ‘healing all manner of sickness and disease’. Every Christian must take a leaf out of Jesus’ book. Jesus not only expected, but also was confident that His followers could do His works, in practical proof of God’s existence.
For the timid Christian, who insists they are not imbued with the same anointing of Jesus, the story of Elijah and the four hundred prophets of Baal in I Kings 18, is instructive. That account puts to silence doubts about an individual’s ability to prove God’s existence. Elijah prayed God to reveal Himself by fire, and He did. Today, many Christians are proving the reality of God’s existence, and they are doing so mainly through spiritual healing, not only of physical and mental ailments, but financial, relationship and other issues, which trouble humanity.
Doubt is effectively silenced when a medical diagnosis is overturned and reversed through spiritual means alone. Overcoming long ingrained sinful thoughts and negative character traits, seeing potential accidents averted, recording success despite militating factors, all point to the benevolent, real and practical influence of God. They prove His existence.
A quote from Science and Health shows the duty of every Christian, in proving God’s reality, to a doubting and disbelieving physical world, steeped in the testimony of the material senses. Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Christian Science Church writes, ‘Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them.’
Nothing is more important to the progress of mankind than Christ healing. So, when physical science lifts its voice arrogantly or ignorantly, demanding proof that God exists, the Christian can silence doubt by responding with undeniable, practical proof – like Christ healing.
