LASU explains suspension of students over assault
Dr. Oluwafunmi Obayori, Dean of Students’Affairs (DSA), Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has shed more light on the suspension of the three students who allegedly attempted to abduct the school’s Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, Tayo Sekoni.
Speaking with journalists, Dr. Obayori disclosed that Oladapo Mojeed, a 500 level student of the School of Transport, has been misinforming his readers on his post on the social media. He noted that Mojeed alleged that the institution’s decision on the three students is one-sided.
Explaining how the school arrived at its decision, Obayori, said: “On Sunday, July 24, the SUG president called me to say that Adebanjo had threatened to beat him and that he will deal with him, but the issue of the abduction came to my notice on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at about 8:30 pm.
“The SUG president said he was assaulted by Adebanjo Fatai, Oladapo Mojeed and Kosoko Folajimi and that he felt they were trying to abduct him along Obadore, Igando Road, Lagos, and when people around the vicinity came to his aid, his abductors left the scene.
He said, “The claim by the President, Tayo Sekoni, concerning the attempted abduction did take place and has been confirmed by the school’s DSA and one of the suspended students, Adebanjo Fatai, a 500 level student of the Faculty of Law acknowledged that he actually threatened to beat Sekoni to coma any time he comes in contact with him.”
The Dean disclosed that during investigation Fatai confirmed the story before him and staff, adding that he (Fatai) even went ahead to send the VC an SMS, saying, “LASU will not contain the president and I when I return to school.”
Obayori disclosed that from information at his disposal, the trouble started from Gombe, when the students attended NANS convention.
The Dean said he called on the affected students, Adebanjo Fatai, Oladayo Mojeed and Fola Kosoko, to put in their report on the issue, but they never reacted.
He called on the public to disregard claims by the suspended students on social media that they were attacked in Gombe during NANS Convention and that they came back to report to the school authority and the university did not do anything, which they never did. It was only after they started threatening the (SUG) president that the school authority knew something had happened in Gombe during NANS Convention and asked them to bring their reports.
He said the school authority is not taking sides with the SUG president, as the police are already investigating the issue.
He said a disciplinary committee has also been set up to look into the matter.
