Magna Curia Takes Town And Gown On Development Issues

The Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, stood still for the former Judge of the World Court, Justice Bola Ajibola, who was guest at the seventh memorial lecture of the school.

Speaking on, “True Federalism: A Panacea To The Economic Crisis In Nigeria,” the guest lecturer, an Associate Prof. of Law at the University of Lagos, Abiola Sanni, said, ‘in troubled times such as the one we are currently facing in the country, one would expect government to tweak its tax policy to give the country a new lease of life.”

Explaining key concepts such as taxing power, fiscal federalism, multiplicity of taxes and double taxation, Sanni noted that true federalism cannot be achieved without these key variables, adding that taxing power needs to be conferred on government to enable it raise revenue through taxes.

Sanni said Nigeria’s economic problem is as a result of lack of efficient allocation of resources among the three tiers of government. He stressed that this lack led to concentration of powers and resources at the centre, thereby promoting waste, corruption and the impoverishment of the nation and its people.

Organised by Magna Curia Chambers, OAU, the Dean of Faculty of Law, Prof. Ademola Popoola, said the lecture was a source of inspiration as well as academic rendezvous to both staff and students of the faculty.

President of the chambers, Okwuoha Uche Raphael, said the lecture aimed at enlightening Nigerians about developments in our society through the law. Magna Curia, he noted, is the youngest chamber in the faculty of law.
