UWC Urges Students To Be Good Ambassadors Of Nigeria

AS over 20 Nigerian students leave the country to gain experiences and knowledge in 15 United World Colleges (UWC) across the globe, the country’s UWC National Committee has called them to utilise the opportunity given them and be good representatives of the country in their respective colleges.

Speaking at the orientation programme organised for the students in Lagos, Chairperson, Publicity Sub-Committee, UWC, Comfort Coleman, said, “UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and sustainable future.

She disclosed that the school’s educational curriculum is well rounded that it could attract students from more than 10 countries across the globe. Coleman stated that this singular act makes the college a melting pot for humanity, adding that she hasn’t seen any student that has gone through the experience and remained the same.

“In Africa, most homes are very traditional in the way they bring up children and so, we have this culture of ‘don’t ask, don’t argue.’ If one comes from such background, be rest assured that when the child comes back, there will be a great transformation that will be shocking because they are taught to query everything; they are taught to ask why, they are taught to examine things and don’t just take things on their face value.

“In this new way of doing things, they discover more about the world; they discover more about other people,” she revealed.

The Executive Secretary, Nigerian National Committee, UWC, Yvonne Ebbi, admonished the students to go to their respective colleges and change the wrong perception the West holds about Nigeria, saying western media have projected Nigeria and Nigerians in a negative light because of bad governance and insecurity in the country.

Established in 1962 by a German educationist, Kurt Hahn, UWC offers young people some educational experience based on shared learning, collaboration and understanding.
