What is your name?
Power with God is also the secret for a change of name, or other appellations. Jacob said, “Except you bless me.” To this, the angel said, “What is your name?”What is the connection between blessing Jacob and what is thy name? The angel knows his name, but wanted to birth a revelation and understanding in Jacob.
Your name is important to your claims in life. I have seen people change their names from what they thought is an occultic name without a deep understanding and revelations (apologies please), which make no difference. Neither did such change the person’s situation. They just did a mere change of name without any spiritual implication. It was done by emotional and sentimental changes.
All through scriptures, God named people before they were born e.g. Isaac -Genesis 17:19; Jonah – 1 Kings 13:2, Solomon -1 Chronicles 22:9; Cyrus was surnamed and even given Job description before he was born (Isaiah 45:1-9, Jesus – Matthew 1:21, John the Baptist – Luke 1:13). This shows that ever before a child is born, heaven has the name (Jeremiah 1).
There are, however, many men that had encounters with God, which changed their names. God changed Abram to Abraham (Genesis 17:5), Sarai to Sarah (Genesis 17:15-16), Simon to Peter (Luke 6:14a), Saul to Paul. These were done by specific heavenly reasons and not from emotion. Not all names have spiritual implication. Some names were given because our parents like them or somebody loves to bear such name. They just fancy it.
God takes the issue of change of name seriously that He said,And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Isaiah 62:2 If you are to change your name, let it be by the mouth of the Lord, by a divine encounter and not just because someone changed his name; otherwise you have made no change or difference in your life.
What is a name?
• A name is a symbol of identity. Everything has a name and you are identified by your name (Genesis 2:19)
• Names determines our nature – our nature sometimes is hidden in our names. For instance, we are Christians because we have Christ nature (Acts 11:26). Nabal means foolishness (1 Samuel 25:25). Abram could not become a father of nations, until he became Abraham (Genesis 17:4-5).
• Names also determine our purpose or mission. Jesus is so-called because of His mission – Matthew 1:21. A good name may connote something bad like Judas, which means praise, but was damaged by Iscariot, a betrayer. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are not good names, it was ascribed to the Babylonians – sun god, negro but because of the bravery of these men, people like the names and parents have named their children as such.
Jacob was changed to Israel. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Genesis 32:28.
We are still evolving and changing from glory to glory.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 1 John 3:2
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18.
Locked in every man are two persons: Jacob and Israel, Abram and Abraham, Sarai and Sarah, Saul and Paul, Simon and Peter. Both entities are looking for expression, looking to take charge and control.
Jacob was the created, while Israel was new and the formed.
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Colossians 3:9-10. You cannot put on one until you put off the other. Simply put, Jacob is the flesh while Israel is the spiritual (Galatians 5:16-17).
Every genuine encounter is the death of the old and the birth of the new. The exit of Jacob is the entrance of Israel. Destiny is not who you are, but who you are going to be, not what you have but what you are going to have; not where you are but where you are going to be. Your present condition or situation is not your final place. You are transforming from who you are now into who you are to be.The angel said: “Thy name shall be called no more Jacob but Israel.”
