He pointed out that advancements in space could greatly benefit critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and weather forecasting.

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, during a meeting with representatives from Axiom Space at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, expressed gratitude to the Axiom Space team and stressed Nigeria’s openness to partnerships.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Director of Media and Corporate Communications at the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr. Felix Ale, highlighted the transformative power of space technologies.

He said: “Space technologies have an impact on almost all aspects of development. The space economy has the potential to create wealth and drive national development.

“We are open to collaboration and partnership in the drive towards the effective development of our space programme.”

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the President on Technology and Digital Economy, Mr. Idris Saliu, praised Nnaji’s commitment, noting that Axiom Space’s proposals would be carefully considered for future collaboration.

He said: “Your passion and determination towards consolidating the nation’s achievements in the critical sector of Space Science and Technology is commendable.”

Also speaking, the Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, expressed appreciation for the Minister’s prioritisation of the meeting, adding that “The success of the Space Agency will no doubt help to better define and drive innovation and development in the country.”

The Senior Director of International Government Business at Axiom Space, Mr. Garvey McIntosh, recognized Nigeria’s potential to become a leading space power in Africa.

McIntosh, while stressing the need for effective policy implementation and investment attraction, said that Nigeria is primed to leverage this relationship into a burgeoning space industry.

In addition to discussions with Axiom Space, Chief Nnaji also met with Brock Pierce, United Nations Special Advisor on Social and Economic Development, to explore further opportunities for enhancing Nigeria’s technological landscape.

He reiterated, “My decision to positively impact various parastatals under my ministry is not just a priority but a mission that must be accomplished.

“With these strategic initiatives, Nigeria is setting its sights on global leadership in space technology, paving the way for a robust and innovative space economy.”
