A Nigerian researcher at Eastern Illinois University, Feyisayo Michael Ogunyemi has won the 2023 Best Paper Award from the International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research in Science, Engineering, and Technology (IJMRSET) for groundbreaking work on AI-powered carbon accounting and ESG reporting.
The award-winning paper, titled “AI-Powered Carbon Accounting: Transforming ESG Reporting Standards for a Sustainable Global Economy,” was selected from over 500 submissions worldwide.
Ogunyemi was honoured after his work stood out for its innovative approach to integrating artificial intelligence with environmental sustainability reporting.
Ogunyemi’s research presents a framework for using AI technologies, such as machine learning, natural language processing, and blockchain to revolutionise carbon accounting.
His study demonstrated how these technologies enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and transparency of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting.
Speaking about the research, Ogunyemi said: “The integration of AI in ESG reporting is transforming carbon accounting by improving accuracy, efficiency, and transparency,” Ogunyemi stated in his award-winning paper. “AI-driven solutions enable businesses to automate carbon footprint assessments, enhance data reliability, and ensure compliance with global sustainability frameworks.”
The selection committee his work had a novel application of AI-driven solutions to improve carbon footprint assessments, prioritises methodological rigour in demonstrating the impact of advanced technologies on sustainability reporting even as the paper demonstrated interdisciplinary relevance, successfully bridging AI, environmental science, and corporate governance
It was also praised for the clarity of presentation and real-world applicability of the research findings
Ogunyemi’s work comes at a crucial time when businesses and regulatory bodies are increasingly prioritising sustainability and seeking more efficient ways to track and report environmental impact.
His research explores how organizations can leverage AI capabilities to transition toward more data-driven, accountable, and sustainable environmental reporting practices. It includes detailed case studies of successful AI implementations across various industries, evaluating key challenges and discussing future research directions to optimize AI’s role in carbon accounting.
The IJMRSET Best Paper Award, announced in December 2023, highlights the journal’s commitment to recognising exceptional research that advances scientific knowledge and practical applications in multidisciplinary fields.
The award showed the growing importance of technological innovation in addressing global sustainability challenges.
This recognition not only celebrates Ogunyemi’s contribution to the field but also reinforces Eastern Illinois University’s position at the forefront of research in artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability. His research sets new standards for integrating technology into sustainability practices and provides a foundation for future studies in AI-powered environmental reporting.
Ogunyemi’s paper was published in Volume six, Issue four of IJMRSET (April 2023).
