Nile University of Nigeria and the Embassy of France in Nigeria have further strengthened their longstanding partnership with the commissioning of a Plastic Recycling Plant aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, innovation, and entrepreneurial development within the university community.

The newly commissioned facility forms part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between both institutions in 2023. The collaboration had earlier resulted in the establishment and donation of a state-of-the-art Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB) to Nile University in 2024, reinforcing the shared commitment of both institutions to research, innovation, and sustainable development.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the Ambassador of France to Nigeria, H.E. Marc Fonbaustier, represented by Mr. Pierre Andriamampianina, described the Plastic Recycling Plant as one of the flagship initiatives supported under the French Embassy Fund (FEF). According to him, the initiative is designed to address plastic waste challenges within Nigerian university campuses through innovation-driven solutions, capacity building, and entrepreneurship.

“This project focuses on equipping the University with the tools, knowledge, and systems needed to transform plastic waste into valuable products, while fostering environmental stewardship, empowering students and researchers, creating economic opportunities, and building future leaders through sustainable environmental practices,” he stated.

The recycling plant is expected to serve as a practical learning and research hub where students, researchers, and innovators can develop sustainable solutions to environmental challenges while exploring opportunities within the circular economy.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Nile University of Nigeria, Professor Dilli Dogo, FNAMed, DFMC, expressed profound appreciation to the Embassy of France for its continued support and strategic partnership with the University.

“We are deeply grateful to the Embassy of France for this impactful collaboration, which began with the establishment of the FABLAB and has now expanded to the commissioning of this Mini Plastic Recycling Plant. This initiative aligns perfectly with our vision of providing education that goes beyond degrees by equipping our students with practical skills, innovation-driven experiences, and opportunities to create solutions that positively impact society,” he said.

Professor Dogo further reaffirmed the University’s commitment to strengthening collaborations with global partners to advance research, innovation, sustainability, and experiential learning.

The commissioning ceremony attracted members of the diplomatic community, academic leaders, students, researchers, and other stakeholders committed to environmental sustainability and educational advancement.

The initiative further positions Nile University as a forward-looking institution leveraging strategic international partnerships to drive innovation, environmental responsibility, and sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.
