‘What NIPOST repositioning means to the ministry’

ANY time soon, the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) is expected to return to profit and become more viable in the country.

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, who disclosed this, said government would be exploring a Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative that will bring both government and the private sector together for NIPOST repositioning.

According to him, the target is having efficient NIPOST services and outlets in all the local governments’ areas in the country, stressing that this will give opportunities to create more jobs.

Shittu explained that the new NIPOST is expected to offer various secretariat services, adding that this will include running a call centre; banking services; Internet Service Provisions, among others.

According to him, consultants are already working on the modalities, with plans to write companies that can manage those services on PPP basis for NIPOST. He stressed that revenue realized will be shared by government and the investor.

“Government has business in business. This is because they are in charge of the welfare of the citizens”, Shittu stressed.

The minister stressed that the ministry’s priority in revitalizing the post is to ensure that whosoever will occupy the position will be prepared to face the business challenge of the 21st Century post offices.

According to Shittu, “NIPOST is a major player in the ministry and the industry and catches my interest. It has a very wide network. Because in the 774 local government areas in the country, NIPOST has structures (offices) in 550 LGA. The other areas where the infrastructures are not available, you still find NIPOST services been rendered through agents.

The plan is a good one, however it needs to be implemented and beneficial to the government and people. NIPOST needs to be like FEDEX, who does deliveries, small business operations like faxing, computer work, document and project printing. basically NIPOST centers across the country needs to be a support center for small business providing all manner of services.
