Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay, former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and others yesterday differed on the form and manner the agitation for restructuring Nigeria would take.

While Oshiomhole argued on morality, accountability and focused leadership as a way out of the structural defects of the country, Sagay believed that the Republican Constitution of 1963 gives a better impression about federalism adding that states should be given autonomy to avoid a situation where state governments have been reduced to mere civil servants, depending on monthly allocation was not ideal.

Sagay also said that states, and not Federal Government, should determine the minimum wage payable to their workers as he condemned the Nigerian Labour Congress NLC position that the issue of minimum wage should remain in the exclusive list.

In his presentation as the guest lecturer, Oshiomhole said what should be paramount in the minds of Nigerians is how to make the Nigeria Project a viable reality.

The event was the 20th Wole Soyinka Annual Lecture with the theme: “Nigerian State in the Aftermath of the Centenary: Prospect For its Indivisibility” held in Benin City.

Oshiomhole in his presentation, explained that what needed to be addressed in the country was the socio-economic structure as well as the problem of bad leadership which has corruption at its core. He frowned at the wasteful spending of scarce resources by government officials, noting that resources should be properly channelled to improve the standard of living of the masses.

Governor Godwin Obaseki who was the chairman of the occasion, said Nigeria’s unity was non-negotiable and maintained that it was possible to make Nigeria great and prosperous again.
