Enugu State Commissioner of Police (CP), Abubakar Lawal, has ordered investigation into an alleged physical assault of a female Police Sergeant in Enugu by an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Oluseyi Okenla.
Okenla, who is in charge of the Enugu Metro Area Command, allegedly battered one Sergeant Helen Onoja at their station in Enugu, which sources confirmed was unprovoked and attracted condemnation from other police officers on duty.
Social media were abuzz with reports of the incident and urging the police to probe the incident with a view to unraveling the cause.
In a statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ndukwe in response to the incident yesterday, CP Lawal set up a panel to investigate to be led by a deputy Commissioner of Police into the matter.
“The Deputy Commissioner of Police in-charge of the State CID Enugu, is to conduct a thorough and conclusive investigation into the story on social media and blogs, alleging that Okenla, physically assaulted a female Police Officer, identified as Helen Onoja for no justifiable reasons.
“The investigation is in view of establishing the facts surrounding the allegations and apportioning appropriate disciplinary sanctions on whoever is found culpable.
“While reassuring members of the public that no stone will be left unturned in getting to the root of the matter and meting out appropriate sanctions, the CP said the Nigeria Police Force remains a regimented and disciplined government agency that will enforce discipline, processes and punishment whenever any officer erred,” the statement reads.
It added that the CP enjoined members of the public to avoid creating or peddling skewed narratives over the incident as alleged, while urging all to count on the command to investigate the matter and activate the internal disciplinary mechanisms of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that justice prevails.
