The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), yesterday, denied that DCP Abba Kyari, who is at one of its facilities, was refusing food.

Reacting to the widespread media reports that the super cop, who is standing trial for drug charges, had been rejecting the facility’s meals in preference for food brought by his wife, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the service, Francis Enobore, stated that Kyari had the right as an awaiting trial inmate, to choose to eat from within or outside.

According to Enobore, as an awaiting trial, “Kyari is not bound to eat food prepared by the NCoS, hence he can opt to apply to the facility’s head to eat food brought by his wife, and equally do so, once his request has been granted.”

Although he did not say if Kyari was given permission, the spokesman, however, stated: “There is nothing like the DCP rejecting food, because he is an awaiting trial inmate and the rule of engagement is such that it allows any person that is awaiting trial to opt for self feeding.”
