Director-General of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who spoke while fielding questions from journalists at the 43rd yearly scientific conference held at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, yesterday, described Lagos as a cosmopolitan city where everybody wants to reside.
“But the state has a small land mass. There are lots of building codes in the state. Lagosians must abide by the rules and regulations of the building codes. They must not build in flooded areas and must never use sub-standard building materials,” he said.
Oke-Osanyintolu said that disasters, whether natural or human, could strike when least expected, noting that there is a need for political will to manage disasters.
In his speech, Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Mustapha Alimi, said Lagos and Nigeria had not been spared of disasters like building collapse, flooding and fire incidents, noting that people have the wrong notion that disasters concern only the health sector.
