Environmental factors, others, limiting girl child, experts say


Experts have listed inadequate societal support and environmental factors as issues affecting girl children from excelling.

Founder, Karis and Eleos Hand of Hope Foundation, Bukola Baniduro, emphasised the need to educate girls on their power and availability of possibilities irrespective of backgrounds and societal limitations.

This was disclosed while the foundation commemorated the international day of the girl child in Lagos, which was attended by secondary school female students of Education District four, Yaba Lagos. The students were educated on leadership, health and menstrual hygiene.

“The culture in the society has made the girl child to believe that she is meant to be in the kitchen whereas there is a table for her in boards of companies and other areas, the reason why we are celebrating them today is to let them know that they are more than that” she said.

She urged parents to champion the cause of gender equality by ensuring they don’t discriminating a boy child from a girl child in the home.

Founder, You Matter To Us Foundation, Omolara Ajetunmobi, said that family issues, lack of support system and other vices has hindered the girl child’s growth.

She urged all stakeholders and government to support and empower women for the future of the girl child and encouraged the girl child in the society to be hardworking and determined in order to achieve their dreams.

Founder, Donors for Africa Foundation, Chidi Koldsweat, harped on continuous learning and need to equip the girl child with leadership skills.

She said that girl child should be taught to be leaders irrespective of the environment they find themselves, stating; “if you lead your self and find the capacity to learn your self, it will help develop you in any environment you find your self.”
