The head of TuneCore West and East Africa, Chioma Onuchukwu, spoke out on the need for the re-education of artistes in understanding the revenue opportunities available in the music industry, including publishing rights and royalty earnings, during a panel discussion at the recently concluded 2022 edition of the Music in Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange, and Showcases (ACCES) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania last weekend. The annual conference brings together artistes, tour agents, managers, labels, distribution agencies and music industry stakeholders for a series of workshops and sessions to exchange ideas, discover new talent and accelerate the shaping of a vibrant music sector in Africa.

Chioma Onuchukwu was joined in the session by other music industry executives which include Karabo Senna, General Manager for Licensing and Sales – SAMRO (South Africa); Mamby Diomandé, Head of Live and Brand – Universal Music Africa (Ivory Coast); Thando Makhunga Managing Director – Sheer Publishing Africa at Downtown Music Services (South Africa) and Lerato Matsoso Stakeholder Relations and Membership Manager – CAPASSO (South Africa) to discuss Untapped Revenue Streams for Music Creators in Africa.
In her remarks, she cited copyright and publishing as some of Africa’s most significant untapped income streams. She attributed this to a lack of understanding of the industry’s business side.
“There is a wealth of information available on monetising your music, so artistes should have a better awareness of viable music revenue prospects. As an artiste, you should continuously look for opportunities to boost music earnings and grow your brand value. There is a great deal of information available on platforms like social media, music websites, and even from experts in the music business. Many musicians are uninformed of these aspects of the music industry, which limits their progress towards building a highly profitable career” – Chioma Onuchukwu, Head of TuneCore East and West Africa.
